ABOUT OLD TOWN BRIDLINGTON
Yes, you’re still in Bridlington, but you have stepped back in time a few hundred years. You’d better behave though, or you could find yourself in the stocks! This is Bridlington’s Old Town, a real historic gem of a place. Along the quaint Georgian High Street there are antique shops, art galleries, craft shops, charming cafes, restaurants and traditional pubs, plus several unique individual retailers. Also this is where the movie Dad's Army was filmed during 2014.
In its picturesque setting on the Green stands St
Mary’s Priory Church, which celebrated 900 years during 2013 and is part of what was once one
of the largest and most important monasteries in Northern England. Do not miss
the superb stained glass windows preserved inside. The Priory Gatehouse, built
in 1388, has served many purposes over the years and it has even been a
prison! These days it is the Bayle Museum and houses informative displays
about the two town locations now together as one, including features on the
famous people connected with Bridlington.
Located in the area adjacent to the High Street, you will also find other olde world pubs nestled between period shops and on nearby St John Street, one of the antique shops was converted during early 2008 into the town's most superior holiday let, arranged over 3 floors. It kept the name of the previous shop 'Magpie Nest' but then became a secret hideaway haven for the holiday-makers, becoming one of the best addresses in Bridlington to stay. Now closed however, as it is so nice, the owners today use it exclusively for themselves and family!
And the stocks? They are still situated in the Market Place. Don't say we didn't warn you!!
A scenic drive from Bridlington can take you to explore the historical fishing village of Flamborough and the Flamborough Headland Heritage Coastline, where at the North Landing most of the beach scenes were filmed for the Universal film Dads Army, released February 2016.
The ancient villages of the northern Wolds are close by, where you will find scenery made famous by the artist David Hockney. Visiting these surrounding areas is a must whilst staying in Bridlington.
